Our first restaurant in Notting Hill was once the site of the famous Mangrove Club, which was run by activist Frank Crichlow in the 1960s. It was a meeting place for the Black community, as well as some very famous customers including Jimi Hendrix, Nina Simone & Bob Marley and eventually became the de facto office of the Notting Hill Carnival.
At Rum Kitchen we try to honour the essence of this all day party. We don’t simply take an order, do a check back and wave our guests goodbye – we take them on a journey. We believe rum cocktails can make anyone dance, jerk BBQ is the tastiest way to cook food and our amazing DJ’s help bring the carnival soundtrack to our guests. And we do all of this with inclusivity at our heart – whether you’re a team member, a guest or an industry partner – Rum Kitchen is for everyone.
Carnival is the ultimate street party, ablaze with vibrant colours and flavours from the islands, set against the soundtrack of steel pan bands and many a sound system. This euphoric atmosphere draws in millions of revellers who flock to the event to absorb and learn about the huge offering of cultural wealth from the Caribbean.
This monumental event that has become a symbol of inclusivity and multiculturalism was once a humble attempt at unifying a community. ‘Claudia’s Caribbean Carnival’ was one visionary lady’s response to the 1958 August Bank Holiday riots and in January 1959, the event that we have come to know as Notting Hill Carnival was born. It’s founding mother, Claudia Jones, wrote in a souvenir brochure that “Our Carnival symbolises the unity of our people resident here and of all our many friends who love the West Indies,”
